Cleaning Your Dryer Vents Can Save Money And Improve Your Living Conditions
Getting your dryer vents cleaned may not be something you think of very often, but it is something you should do at least once a year. The best time to tackle this job is just before summer. The snow has melted making the vents easy to get to, and you’re removing flammable material before the hottest time of year.
It’s important to note that your dryer has several places where this built up can occur. The first is the lint trap in the dryer itself. You should be emptying this after every load. There’s also the vent hose that connects your dryer to the vent in the wall. Finally, there’s the ductwork within the walls that vents outside. This may be the hardest part – and the area you need to hire a professional to help with.
Dirty Dryer Vents Cause Fires
This happens all the time. A scary amount actually. The lint and other material that ends up in your dryer vent are extremely flammable. If it’s not cleaned out periodically, it can cause real problems. The reason fires start is that you’re essentially taking a lot of flammable material, stuffing it in a small space that gets extremely hot, especially in the summer. It doesn’t take much to ignite that dryer fluff and cause you some real problems.
Your Dryer Becomes Inefficient
Dryers work by cycling warm air through your clothes to get them dry. If your dryer vents are clogged, less air gets out. This means less fresh air gets in. If the air isn’t cycling through the dryer well enough, that means humid air isn’t escaping.
This is when your dryer becomes inefficient. The less humid air that escapes means it takes longer for your clothes to get dry. This can also keep your clothes from smelling fresh.
If you notice that your dryer isn’t performing at peak efficiency or your clothes are a little musty – it’s time to clean the dryer vent!
